Most visitors give a homepage a few seconds before deciding whether to stay, scroll or leave. In that time they are not reading every word. They are scanning for four answers. If your homepage gives them quickly, visitors keep going. If it does not, they go back to search and choose someone else.
1. What do you do?
The first thing a visitor should understand is what you offer, in plain words. "Excellence in every solution" says nothing; "Custom uniforms and branded workwear, delivered across Ghana" says everything. Put that sentence at the top of the page, in large type, before any slider or welcome message.
2. Who is it for?
Make it obvious who you serve: homeowners or businesses, individuals or institutions, Kumasi or the whole country. When visitors recognise themselves, they keep reading. When they cannot tell, they assume you are not for them.
3. Why should I trust you?
Strangers need a reason to believe you. Show it early with real evidence:
- Recognisable clients or partners, with permission.
- Short testimonials from named customers.
- Photos of real work, products or premises rather than stock images.
- Numbers that matter, such as years in business or projects delivered, only if they are true.
4. What should I do next?
Every homepage needs one clear next step: call, chat on WhatsApp, request a quote, book a visit or buy now. Make it a visible button near the top, and repeat it lower down. If there are five equally loud buttons, visitors often choose none.
Run the five-second test
Show your homepage to someone who does not know your business for five seconds on their phone, then close it. Ask them what you do, who it is for and what they would click. If they cannot answer all three, the page needs work, not more content.
Clarity beats cleverness. A plain sentence that explains what you do will outperform a beautiful slogan nobody understands.
The most common fixes
- Replace the vague headline with a sentence that says what you do and for whom.
- Remove auto-playing sliders that hide your message behind moving images.
- Move proof up the page, close to your headline.
- Make the main button stand out and make sure phone numbers and WhatsApp links are tappable.
- Check it on a phone, because that is where most visitors will see it.
